Above Ground

Above Ground encourages companies to respect human rights. It promotes access to Canadian courts for those who are harmed by Canadian companies overseas. Moreover, it encourages the Canadian government to fulfill its legal duty to protect against human rights abuse by the private sector.

Africa-Canada Forum

The Africa-Canada Forum (ACF) is a Working Group of Cooperation Canada. It brings together NGOs, churches, unions, and solidarity groups from across Canada that have a specific interest in development cooperation and social justice in sub-Saharan Africa. Its purpose is threefold: (i) to improve the quality and impact of the work of participating groups through reflection and analysis of current programming relationships in Africa; (ii) to improve the coordination of policy development and strategies for joint action and advocacy; and (iii) to engage in dialogue with African counterparts and colleagues.

Americas Policy Group

The Americas Policy Group (APG) is a national network of Canadian civil society organizations working for human rights and social and environmental justice in Latin America and the Caribbean. It brings together over twenty international development and humanitarian NGOs, human rights organizations, labour unions, faith-based and solidarity groups, and research institutions.

Amnesty International Canada

Amnesty International Canada is part of the Amnesty International global movement of people fighting injustice and promoting human rights. Amnesty’s Business and Human Rights programme seeks to ensure that companies are held accountable for human rights abuses they commit and that people whose rights have been violated by companies have access to justice and effective remedy.

Amnistie internationale Canada francophone

Amnistie internationale Canada francophone is the French Canadian branch of the global Amnesty International movement of people fighting injustice and promoting human rights. Its Business and Human Rights campaign seeks to ensure that the practices of Big Business don’t negatively impact the human rights of people in the regions in which they operate.

Asia-Pacific Working Group

The Asia-Pacific Working Group (APWG) is one of three geographic working groups of Cooperation Canada. The APWG brings together NGOs, faith-based organizations, unions and solidarity groups from across Canada that have a specific interest in development, social justice, and human rights in Asia. The APWG’s purpose is to improve the impact of its members through collaborative reflection and analysis, including input from southern partners, and through the coordination of policy development, dialogue and learning.

Association québécoise des organismes de coopération internationale

The Association québécoise des organismes de coopération internationale (AQOCI), established in 1976, brings together 69 organizations from 13 regions of the province of Quebec that work, abroad and locally, to bring about sustainable and human development. AQOCI’s mission is to promote and support the work of its members and their international solidarity initiatives. Drawing on the strength of its network, AQOCI works to eradicate the causes of poverty and to build of a world based on the principles of justice, inclusion, equality and respect for human rights

British Columbia Teachers’ Federation

The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation represents all 43,000 public school teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 12 across BC. Founded in 1917 in Vancouver, the BCTF has grown to include 69 local teacher unions across the province. Over the past century, the BCTF has been a strong voice for the professional and labour rights of teachers as well as the rights of all students to universal access to high-quality publicly-funded education. As a proud social justice union, the BCTF advocates for equity and inclusion in every aspect of public schooling so that all teachers, staff, students and their families feel welcomed and supported in a community of learning. The BCTF is an affiliate of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and of Education International.

Canada Tibet Committee

The Canada Tibet Committee (CTC) defends and promotes human rights and democratic freedoms of the Tibetan people. The CTC monitors developments inside Tibet and builds public awareness in Canada through its outreach activities. The CTC encourages support for Tibet from the Government and Parliament of Canada.

Canadian Jesuits International

Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) has more than 50 years of experience in global solidarity, working with people struggling for social justice and dignity in the world. In the Global South, CJI supports projects in education, livelihood support, emergency assistance, health, sustainable agriculture and refugees. In Canada, CJI acts in solidarity with its partners through awareness raising, education and advocacy.

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) monitors, defends and reports on free expression and access to information in Canada and abroad. Rooted in the field of journalism, they promote a free media as essential to a fair and open society. CJFE boldly champions the free expression rights of all people, and encourages and supports individuals and groups in the protection of their own and others’ free expression rights.

Canadian Labour Congress

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is the largest labour organization in Canada, bringing together dozens of national and international unions, provincial and territorial federations of labour and community-based labour councils to represent 3.3 million workers. The CLC is committed to social justice for mining workers, communities and indigenous groups in Canada and around the world. The CLC represents workers at the International Labour Organization (ILO) and engages in international solidarity efforts and campaigns surrounding corporate accountability, fair trade, and labour and social protections within global supply chains.

Canadian Union of Public Employees

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is Canada’s largest union, with 700,000 members across the country. CUPE represents workers in health care, emergency services, education, early learning and child care, municipalities, social services, libraries, utilities, transportation, airlines and more. It has 68 offices across the country, in every province.

Centre International de Solidarité Ouvrière

The Centre International de Solidarité Ouvrière (CISO) is an inter-union international solidarity organization. It regroups Quebec-based unions, grassroots groups and individual members. The CISO develops education and cooperation activities to raise public awareness. Its mission is to develop international solidarity by strengthening the links between workers here and elsewhere who are fighting for the respect of their rights, for better working conditions and for the establishment of a more just and democratic society.

CoDevelopment Canada

CoDevelopment Canada is a BC-based non-profit that links labour and community groups working for social change. For more than 30 years it has supported people working to change their lives. Founded in 1985 to build partnerships between people in Canada and Latin America, it believes that solidarity is at the root of global justice and it works with its partners to improve the lives of women, workers, teachers and families. Its goal is to foster sustainable and equitable development across the Americas and to build awareness among Canadians of global issues and our responsibilities as global citizens.

Comité pour les droits humains en Amérique latine

The Comité pour les droits humains en Amérique latine (CDHAL) is a solidarity organization that works for the defense and promotion of human rights in reciprocity with social movements and communities in Latin America through their fight for social, environmental, economic and cultural justice. Using a global approach, the CDHAL’s actions critically analyze oppressive structures in our societies and encourage the Canadian, Quebec and Latin American governments to adopt international policies that prioritize human rights.

Cooperation Canada

Cooperation Canada (formerly the Canadian Council for International Co-operation) brings together Canada’s international development and humanitarian organizations and advocates for them by convening sector leaders, influencing policy and building capacity. Together, we work with partners both inside and outside Canada to build a world that’s fair, safe and sustainable for all.

Development and Peace

Development and Peace (The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace) is the official international development organization of the Catholic Church in Canada and the Canadian member of Caritas Internationalis. Development and Peace is a membership led organization supported by parish collections, individual donations and government grants.

Friends of the Earth Canada

Friends of the Earth Canada stands on guard for Mother Earth and her people — taking action to confront polluters, holding governments to account for their promises and insisting they enforce laws. It insists that each and every resident of Canada deserves a clean, safe environment and can exercise his or her environmental rights to make it so. It stands in solidarity with vulnerable people and communities to confront the impacts of climate change and toxic pollution.

Grandmothers Advocacy Network

The Grandmothers Advocacy Network (GRAN) is a non- partisan network of volunteers across Canada, advocating for the human rights of grandmothers, vulnerable children and youth in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Human Rights Watch Canada

Human Rights Watch is one of the world’s leading independent organizations dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world. Established in 1978, Human Rights Watch is known for its accurate fact-finding, impartial reporting, effective use of media, and targeted advocacy, often in partnership with local human rights groups. In Canada, the organization engages with Canadian decision-makers in government and in other sectors as part of its advocacy work.

Inter Pares

Inter Pares – which means among equals – believes in solidarity, not charity, as an approach to international cooperation. For 40 years, Inter Pares has worked closely with courageous activists and more than a hundred inspiring organizations throughout the world to build peace, advance justice and globalize equality. As part of its economic justice work, Inter Pares calls for effective regulation of the extractive industry to prevent human rights abuses and environmental damage. It also promotes tax justice through tackling tax havens that deprive countries of their rightful revenue.

KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives

KAIROS unites ten Christian churches and religious organizations in a faithful ecumenical response to the call to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). It deliberates on issues of common concern, advocates for social justice and joins with people of faith and goodwill in action for social transformation.

Maquila Solidarity Network

The Maquila Solidarity Network (MSN) is a labour and women’s rights organization that supports the efforts of workers in global supply chains to win improved wages and working conditions and greater respect for their rights. MSN works with women’s and labour rights organizations, primarily in Central America and Mexico, on cases of worker rights violations and on joint projects and initiatives focused on systemic issues in the garment industry. MSN is a Witness Signatory to the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh and a member of the Transparency Pledge Coalition campaigning for public disclosure of supply chain information by international apparel and footwear companies.

Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network

The Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network (BTS) is a voluntary network of people in the Maritimes who began to organize in 1988 to support the efforts of Guatemalans struggling for political, social, and economic justice. It recognizes that injustice is connected to structural inequalities both within and between countries, and BTS is committed to supporting structural transformation both in Guatemala and in Canada. As a community of people who share a commitment to solidarity, it undertakes advocacy and lobbying; organizes delegations; sends interns, volunteers, and human rights accompaniers; promotes fairly-traded coffee; and raises awareness within its own communities through speaking tours by Guatemalan leaders and other political campaigns.

Mennonite Central Committee Canada

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, shares God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. MCC envisions communities worldwide in right relationship with God, one another and creation.

Mining Injustice Solidarity Network

The Mining Injustice Solidarity Network (MISN) is a Toronto-based activist group that organizes to draw attention to and resist the negligent and abusive practices of Canadian mining companies. In solidarity with affected communities and in response to their calls for support, MISN: educates the Canadian public on mining injustices in Canada and around the world; advocates for stronger community control of mining practices and in support of self-determination in mining-affected areas; and agitates against corporate impunity and in support of substantive regulatory change.

Mining Justice Action Committee

Mining Justice Action Committee is a group of residents on Vancouver Island/unceded Coast Salish Territories (British Columbia, Canada) united by concerns that many Canadian mining companies are responsible for human rights violations, social degradation and environmental crimes around the world. MJAC’s vision is a future in which all Canadian mining companies operating in Canada and throughout the world not only comply with international environmental standards and human rights, including indigenous rights, but also become world leaders in best practices that respect local communities and ecologies.

MJAC engages in education, lobbying, advocacy and peaceful action for change. In solidarity with other concerned peoples and organizations, they raise awareness about unethical international mining practices by Canadian corporations and their connections with investment, laws, and foreign policy in Canada.

MiningWatch Canada

MiningWatch Canada is a pan-Canadian initiative supported by environmental, social justice, Aboriginal and labour organisations from across the country. It addresses the urgent need for a co-ordinated public interest response to the threats to public health, water and air quality, fish and wildlife habitat and community interests posed by irresponsible mineral policies and practices in Canada and around the world.

Nobel Women’s Initiative

The Nobel Women’s Initiative uses the prestige of the Nobel Peace Prize and five courageous women peace laureates— Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi, Tawakkol Karman, and Leymah Gbowee—to magnify the power and visibility of women working in countries around the world for peace, justice and equality. The six women bring together their extraordinary experiences and work to spotlight, amplify and promote the work of grassroots women’s organizations and movements around the world. The Nobel Women’s Initiative was established in 2006.

Oxfam Canada

Oxfam Canada is part of a global movement for change made up of 20 Oxfam affiliate organizations working in more than 90 countries to mobilize the power of people against poverty. It’s mission is to build lasting solutions to poverty and injustice with a focus on improving the lives and promoting the rights of women and girls.

Peace Brigades International Canada

Peace Brigades International is a global movement of activists seeking justice and peace, supporting and standing in solidarity with threatened human rights defenders across the world. Our aim is to protect and support these brave individuals and organisations; strengthen their physical, digital and political security; and enhance their wellbeing. We adapt our approach to both the changing global context and the various constraints human rights defenders and organisations that support them encounter.

Projet Accompagnement Québec-Guatemala

Projet Accompagnement Québec-Guatemala (PAQG) is a solidarity organization founded on the volunteer engagement of human rights advocates. Its mission is to act in support of Guatemalan human rights defenders in protection of victims of atrocities and in support of civil, political, social, cultural and economic rights. Its volunteers accompany Guatemalan human rights defenders in their struggles for justice and observe the human rights situation in the country. In Quebec, its team raises awareness about the situation in Guatemala through educational and recruitment activities.

Public Service Alliance of Canada

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) represents nearly 230,000 workers in every province and territory in Canada and in locations around the world. Our members work for federal government departments and agencies, Crown Corporations, universities, casinos, community services agencies, Aboriginal communities, airports, and the security sector among others. PSAC is headquartered in Ottawa with 23 regional offices across Canada.

Regroupement pour la Responsabilité Sociale des Entreprises

The Regroupement pour la Responsabilité Sociale des Entreprises (RRSE) is an not-for-profit organization that has been working since 1999 to improve environmental and social issues as well as corporate governance practices within companies. The RRSE wants to see the emergence of a fairer society, where stakeholders are listened to and companies are willing to be more accountable. Founded by committed and forward-thinking Quebec religious communities, the organization is based on the founding members’ desire for social change. Their values of solidarity and humanism are at the heart of RRSE’s mission.

Steelworkers Humanity Fund

The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered Canadian Charity funded by United Steelworkers (USW) member contributions. For more than 25 years, The Humanity Fund has supported international development projects, provided emergency humanitarian aid for disasters around the world, supported food banks across Canada and offered an education program for Steelworker members. The United Steelworkers has more than 225,000 members in Canada and is Canada’s most diverse union, representing men and women working in every sector of the economy.

Social Justice Connection

Social Justice Connection (SJC) is an independent organization providing education and advocacy about human rights, global poverty and inequality. Through its education program, the SJC offers unique and engaging educational tools and interactive workshops to schools, NGOs and community groups. In its advocacy, the SJC engages policy makers at the national and international levels to press for greater fairness and the recognition of human rights standards in global finance.

Solidarité Laurentides-Amérique Centrale

Solidarité Laurentides-Amérique Centrale (SLAM) est un organisme de coopération internationale (OCI) qui oeuvre dans la région des Laurentides depuis 1984. Unifor is Canada’s largest private sector union, with more than 315,000 members across the country, working in every major sector of the Canadian economy. Unifor is committed to social justice in Canada and around the world. Unifor is dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families in Canada and around the world. One way it expresses that commitment is through its Social Justice Fund. The Unifor Social Justice Fund promotes and supports the role of trade unions and workers groups in their efforts to strengthen democracy, promote equitable development, and contribute to poverty reduction, social justice and education reform.

United Church of Canada

The United Church of Canada is the largest Protestant denomination in Canada and has partnerships with churches, agencies, and ecumenical organizations around the world. The founders of the United Church believed that ours is a living faith, a faith that is expressed not only in ministry, but also in mission in and with the world.
